I knew that they offered them with manuals on the previous generation but I didn’t realize this existed. It isn’t even a base model. It doesn’t have windy windows like my neighbor’s base model Camry of this vintage. Please enjoy these baffling photos of an unusual beige mobile.
Also, that is a meaty shifter!

Maybe they are just really small or perhaps so beige that they defy your short attention span

The XV40 generation ( this one ) was the last to offer a manual transmission.
I believe only the 2nd generation and 4th generation could be had with the V6 and a manual transmission.
One thing that your post made me realize; the manual transmission XV40s had a manual handbrake. The automatic cars had a foot brake. Kind of wild that Toyota would go through the trouble to have two completely different parking brake setups.

Makes sense, as the Scion tC with the same engine at the same time was also available with a stick.

There is one for sale near me, I am genuinely in the market for a regular boring but must be manual car. It’s even a decent price....
Not gonna happen

I'd drive this, no questions asked.

They knew that if you were rowing your own that you'd want to make handbrake turns..

The problem is that the steering and everything else would be completely devoid of any tactile feedback or interest whatsoever

I had a manual corolla in Ireland. Boring as shit, but the manual did help.

That interior looks incredibly dreary...

early
3rd gens could be had with manual. 92-93 only. Same for the ES300 of the same vintage.

Same shifter in my 2009 Pontiac Vibe Toyota Matrix. Except mine is a 5 speed.

The shifter is in a better position for the long shaft to make sense though. On the Camry, it just sticks way too high up in the otherwise inoffensive interior to be cohesive.

That’s exactly the reason why. I can deal if the engine isn’t sporty, the trans sucks (still needs a clutch pedal) and the suspension is like jello. The only real dealbreaker is that miserable zero feedback EPS steering feel. I have yet to try an EPS rack that didn’t suck (I have yet to try one that’s supposed to be sporty)
